Why joining a school sport is important
By Ahmad Abdalraheem, Grade 10 / Year 11 Student
Participating in school athletics has several benefits for students planning to go to college. The first reason is that it improves a student's college application by highlighting attributes like leadership, cooperation, and commitment. Participating in sports demonstrates a student's capacity for time management and collaboration with others—qualities that colleges value highly. Admissions officials find discipline and a strong work ethic, which are both demonstrated by this involvement, to be desirable. Basketball, for example, teaches you leadership skills, teamwork and collaboration skills, communication skills, time-management, and decision making. These skills are only some of what basketball teaches you. As an athlete myself, I encourage my peers to participate in some type of sports recreation program whether be in school or outside of school. The benefits of these programs are exceptional and it will last a lifetime.
